Cathy Meehan: How many times do we go to the store to buy a supplement and we have no idea what we’re looking for or what is the best quality? Where is it resourced? The industry for supplements is massive. And on today’s episode of the Meehan Mission podcast, I’m going to introduce everyone to Meg Sutton.
Now, many of you know Meg because she is our natural health consultant here at MeehanMD. And I just have to tell you, her brain is so full of knowledge and her ability to educate patients is just phenomenal. I love having Meg here as our special resource. So many of the things that Meg does is she does curate and go through all of the products that are on the Mindset Wellness Shop.
She also leads the team when it comes to alternative therapies. She is also very involved, like I said, with the education of patients and writing our health guides. But most importantly, she is the go-to for patient education. So please like the video, subscribe to our channel, share with people so that we can continue the mission of education. And most of all, let’s meet Meg.
Cathy Meehan: Well, hello everyone and welcome to the Meehan Mission podcast where we explore faith, science, health and truth. And we like to empower families with knowledge. So today I’m joined by someone who many of you already know, Meg Sutton. And Meg is our natural health consultant. She is a key member of our team at MeehanMD. She oversees the Mindset Wellness Shop.
She guides patients through supplement questions and natural remedies. She helps lead our alternative therapy support for cancer patients. She’s also the author of the Mindset Kids Natural Health Guide. And I think you’re also working on an adult one, the MeehanMD Natural Health Guide for Adults. So we’ve got a lot to go through. Meg spends so much time educating patients and working with them.
just to help kind of cut through the confusion. So Meg, welcome to the show today.
Meg Sutton: Thank you, it’s great to be here.
Cathy Meehan: You bet. Well, let’s get started kind of from the beginning. What really spawned this like passion that you have for natural health? Because you are the go-to for natural health.
Meg Sutton: So it’s, I’ve been very lucky. I grew up in kind of the natural health realm, thanks to my mother. It wasn’t until a family member got sick that I decided to cut through all the noise and get certified in naturopathy. So I went, I think it was in 2016, I think it was, and learned about how our bodies are designed, how God made us, how to support them naturally and help those around me. So yeah, a little bit about that.
Cathy Meehan: Well, that’s great because we love the wealth of knowledge that you have. So my question is, how did you end up at MeehanMD?
Meg Sutton: Hahaha! actually used to work in the corporate world. It wasn’t until I wanted to join a political action group here in Oklahoma, Oklahomans for Parental Rights and Vaccine group. What’s the… Okay, HPR, and I probably got that wrong. So sorry. It’s changed a couple times. That’s why.
Cathy Meehan: We’ll flash it up on the screen.
Meg Sutton: Yeah. disclosure, I am not… I’ve never been vaccinated and so I’ve always had a passion to educate people on vaccines. And so I joined the group and I met your lovely husband at a legislator’s lunch. Didn’t know who he was. I went there to educate the legislator on vaccines and parental health. And when I was about to ask a question at this luncheon, he pops his hand up and asks pretty much the exact same question that I was gonna ask. And I turned to my friend who was with me at that time and I’m like, who is this? I need to know who this guy is. So that’s when we started our friendship and I met you, your lovely wife, Ms. Kathy. And we had a blast going to the Capitol and educating legislators and anyone else that would listen. We might’ve ruffled a few feathers.
But that is fine. And it wasn’t until fast forward, we’d been working together that you and him found out that I had a background in natural health. You really wanted to get that off the ground. And I was looking to get out of the corporate world. I did marketing, I did revenue services, dispute resolution, all of that stuff. And that’s when you guys offered me this job and it has been an absolute dream. And I feel like I’m with family and I absolutely love it. I love taking care of people.
Cathy Meehan: yeah. Well, and also I do have to add that you have that mission, attitude and just belief in your body, which, know, I do, I pride MeehanMD and all of the team members that are here because our goal is to be that resource and that help and that education. And so that is really what I think it makes us so much different than a lot of the other clinics that are out there is that we really want to empower the patient with education. And I know you do so much of that. But let’s talk about one of the main things that we use your brain for. And that is when a lot of people don’t want to have prescriptions or they just want to like supplement their body. And your knowledge is so deep when it comes to different types of supplementation. And if we can just kind of start because the industry is massive.
Meg Sutton: It is massive. And the marketing behind it is even bigger.
Cathy Meehan: Right, right. So how do patients actually know, where do we start? Quality? Do we want to start with quality? How do you know a high quality supplement from something that’s not high quality?
Meg Sutton: I mean, in all honesty, it’s about research. You have to do the research. Even with me, it’s hard to determine at times. And we can go back to the basics, like let’s go to folic acid. We really need to think about the synthetic forms. So educate yourself on the synthetic forms of the supplements. Our body doesn’t know how to process those synthetic forms, and so it can actually do more damage than good. So folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. So especially people with methylation issues, you shouldn’t be using folic acid. You’re going to find it in rich flowers, in processed foods. You’ll see it right there, folic acid. It binds to our folate receptors and creates methylation issues. So that is something that I tried to tell people you’re going to have to start going back to the basics and looking at your food ingredients to know where that is. Another one is cyanocobalamin. So that is the synthetic form of B12. There’s a cyanide molecule in it. And so a lot of people think, it’s B12. We’re doing great. Well, the problem is, again, it’s doing more harm than good. And so we really want, there’s a couple different forms of B12 that are better. There’s hydroxocobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, and then our favorite, methylcobalamin. And so those are gonna be more natural forms of B12. And to really kind of go back to what you were asking, research it, know the synthetic forms, and stay away from the synthetic forms. You’ll find a lot of those in energy drinks.
I teach a natural health class to high school students, which I absolutely love. And we’re doing pantry swaps and they’re bringing in their ingredients and their drinks and everything. And we’re looking at the ingredients and diving deep. And I will tell you, most of those energy drinks have cyanocobalamin in it. It’s got all these synthetic ingredients. And so we’re going to do healthy swaps of those. And so I’m kind of excited about that.
Cathy Meehan: That’s a great idea. Curved into something else. Yeah, well, you know, so what’s interesting is I’m sitting there listening to her spew out these really big long words. And that’s what I love about what you do is you actually do the research for us and you do the research for our patients, which, you know, that was my husband, Jim. He would like tell somebody, OK, well, you need to go get some vitamin D and they would go to a big box store and buy a really crappy form of vitamin, go CalCel for all, D2. Yeah, and come back. And so that’s kind of why we actually created the Mindset Wellness Shop. And it was because we wanted to make sure that what we were telling patients or suggesting to patients were actually curated, high quality.
Meg goes through that and she’ll pick, yes, we have a private line, but we also have many other lines and forms of some of the supplements so that people can actually still have a choice. But everything has already been researched and put in there, which I love because I got a lot of things going on. So we all. Many people in our listening group have a lot of things going on. And it’s just so much easier to find somebody that you trust and you know that they’re smart and you guys make the
Meg Sutton: Well, and that’s another thing. Research is always coming up with new things. So we might change things or we might get new information and then fine tune our shop or find something that’s a little bit better. So, you know, you can’t stay, you have to always have a student mind. So researching and always learning is key and important.
Cathy Meehan: Yeah, because the science is not settled.
Meg Sutton: No, no, it’s not.
Cathy Meehan: Yeah. Well, you know, talking about science and that kind of throws me into like conventional healing and all of those things, but you take more of a natural approach and then we have a conventional approach. How do you simplify the difference when talking to people if they’re not aware of natural therapies and remedies. What do you say? How do you introduce that?
Meg Sutton: Well, honestly, I go back to how the Lord created us. So he created us to be able to heal properly, heal naturally. Our bodies are amazing. They are made to heal themselves. We just get in the way. So, and we do live in a very toxic world. I mean, they can’t control us by the laws, so they’re going to control us by the foods. So toxins are prevalent in our world. And so it’s just, it’s very difficult because we are going to have to go back to nature. Know, what did God create? And then how did, how can we support our bodies in that way? So go back to the basics, stop overthinking things is a big thing.
Cathy Meehan: Right. Well, and I think a lot of pharmaceutical companies, what they do is they take things that are found in nature. And then they make it into a synthetic form so that they can patent it and so that they can market it. And the problem with you create the synthetic form is you’re going to have more adverse events.
Meg Sutton: Lots of fillers. Yeah, fillers and so many other things. And just if we can go back to that natural kind of remedy and stuff. And there’s always a need for conventional route, but it’s to me, it’s not to restore your health. It’s to buy you more time. Honestly, is the way I kind of think of it. So, you know, go back to, go back to nature, God and go back to how God intended things.
Cathy Meehan: Absolutely. So you also educate patients. And so I want you to talk about the mindset kids natural health guide because that is just a beautiful piece of work.
Meg Sutton: Thank you. And so what was the inspiration by that and how did you lay that out? So we get so caught up in, you know, complicating things. And I wanted to go back to how our great grandmothers, how our ancestors treated illness back in the day. So growing up, my mother, I don’t ever remember going to the doctor, ever. You know, when we had a fever, we supported our bodies. Yay, our body’s detoxing. So it’s all about mindset. How are we thinking about this illness? What is going on with our body? So I wanted to bring that into a natural health guide. Don’t think that fever is bad. It’s our bodies pushing this toxin or detoxing, or our bodies need extra care. Support it naturally, and this is how you can support it naturally. And you know, your body will be stronger by letting it do its thing.
Cathy Meehan: Yeah, that’s so important. And again, that’s part of the education. Yeah. Part of the education. And so we had such a great response to the Mindset Kids Natural Health Guide that you are currently working on the MeehanMD Natural Health Guide for adults.
Meg Sutton: So it is done, just waiting on her to give me the seal of approval and then it’s coming out.
Cathy Meehan: And then it’ll be out and it’ll be available. So we’re really looking forward to that. That’s going to be great. Again, going back to educating people on, you know, what are some natural remedies and things that you can do. And then there’s always a little segment on, you know, when you need to actually contact your physician. Which is really so important because a lot of people are just either they’re new to natural remedies or they just don’t go to the doctor anymore, but sometimes you do need that little extra support and backup.
Meg Sutton: And it can be overwhelming. And that’s why I did put in there kind of a page that tells me what’s in my wellness cabinet. So these are kind of things that I keep in my, I really have a wellness cabinet. It’s like a little glass cabinet that has all my little remedies. And fun fact, I actually make my own remedies too. I’m working to be an herbalist. So I love making things. You know, this wellness cabinet and what I have, and of course it might be a little bit more than what I have listed there, but I put the basics, you know, the basics of what to have on hand and you can pretty much treat almost anything with those things. So it’s a good start. So it doesn’t seem as overwhelming.
Cathy Meehan: Right. That is actually a good thing, which I’m going to ask you. So is there like two to three supplements that pretty much everybody probably needs to be taking.
Meg Sutton: So my absolute favorite is an organ complex. And I mean like bovine organs. So if anybody knows Weston A. Price, he did a big study and he went back to indigenous tribes and saw why their health was so good. Why their bodies were strong, their teeth were beautiful. And we learned how they ate and one of the key components is they ate organ meats. It’s very bioavailable nutrients, a good profile of vitamins and minerals. And that is one thing that I absolutely love. I take it, my family takes it. So that one, do you take it?
Cathy Meehan: Yes, I do. We do that. The Organ Powerhouse. We’ve got that one.
Meg Sutton: It’s great for a multitude of issues. And I kind of think of it as nature’s multivitamins. So it’s one of my favorite. Yes. Another one, magnesium, of course. We are finding that vitamin D is important for a multitude of things. Yes. However, a lot of times we need to think of things as a whole. So vitamin D, you really need vitamin K with it. It’s good to have magnesium with it. So they work together. So that’s another one that’s really important. We’re doing genomics testing now. We’re finding a lot of people have variants that they can’t absorb as much vitamin D through the sun is what we’re finding. So it helps us to be able to need to supplement with it. And we have a resource for that.
Those are kind of some that I really like that are pretty basic that I love right now. And another one. Sulforaphane. Has anyone ever heard of Sulforaphane?
Cathy Meehan: Okay, so I’m going to tell you, I do the Organ Powerhouse, I do the Vitamin D, and I do the magnesium. But the one you just said? Yeah. It’s a mouthful. I think I’m going to have to add that. So yeah, explain.
Meg Sutton: So, broccoli sprouts. So that’s basically what Sulforaphane, you know, that’s where they’re getting it, but it helps support your detox pathways. Since we live in a toxic world, we need to be able to support those detox pathways so that we can get those toxins out. So sulforaphane, it not only does that, but it does so much more. And like I said, we’re doing genomics testing now and it comes up on every single person’s report. So sulforaphane is a beautiful supplement to add. If you are not into supplementation, then do broccoli sprouts. You can grow your own, but just make sure that you get that into your diet somehow and you know, that’s good.
Cathy Meehan: That’s great advice. And you know what? Also, you talked about that we live in a toxic world.
Meg Sutton: We do. We do.
Cathy Meehan: And so that’s really, know, Meg and I decided let’s do kind of like maybe a monthly episode of health and wellness.
Meg Sutton: Whoa, I’m getting invited back.
Cathy Meehan: Yes, yes, yes. And maybe next month we’ll tackle detoxing in our world because you know, that is so important. We cannot live in a bubble. We cannot live in a bubble. So what can we do, you know, in these certain areas just to eliminate some of these toxins or what do we do to detox? I think that would be a great episode to have.
Meg Sutton: If you guys go down that rabbit hole. Yeah.
Cathy Meehan: We love rabbit holes, by the way. We absolutely do. So if you guys enjoyed this podcast, thank you for joining us. Share it. Like us, and we will be back next month.
Meg Sutton: Yep. Sounds good. And y’all have a great blessed day.
Cathy Meehan: Thank you.
Meg Sutton: Thank you.
